I was part of the big tech layoff one year ago. I’m a tech recruiter. The amount of money they waste is astonishing. Myself and my “class” of recruiters often had very little to do. I couldn’t figure out why we were hired. We all kept saying that eventually, someone would figure out that they hired way too many people. And then they did.
I’ve been a recruiter for over 20 years and this is by far the worst market I have seen in that time. I finally have my first interview in almost a year next week. Every single job opening has thousands of recruiters applying. This is only going to get worse.
I’m a steel fabricator. We have robots in the shop, but not to replace welders. They do really mundane tasks, while the shop has the humans doing more of the stuff that the robots can’t. I and my coworkers are working steady 50 hours a week building structure for chip fabrication plants, and wait for it, AI data centers. We’re booked up for work for all of fiscal year 2024 and are lining up more jobs. By the way, schooling cost $10K. Paid that off Q2 of my first year working, but hey, what do I know? I don’t have a six figure gender studies degree I can’ put to use to pay off.
