When I was in 4th and 5th grade the school was having a budget issue. They made a decision that if you lived within a mile of the school you have to walk instead of have the bus pick you up. Sure a lot of parents drove the kids to school but a lot of us walked. This was western Washington so a lot of rain.
One day I found a blasting cap on the side of Benson hwy on my way to school. They did a lot of mining around us back then. So I brought it to school and showed my teacher what I found. She freaked out and ran it to the principal. I had to go tell the police where I found it. in retrospect I think that part was funny as it clearly fell off a truck haul supplies to a mine. At the time I thought I was getting in trouble.
Ten year old’s are in the 4th or 5th grade. Walking alone is not a big deal.
